The Green Energy Act and the subsequent Ontario FIT program launched in 2009 were a problem right from the get go. The “Bad Contract Act” as our PC Party Leader, Patrick Brown refers to it, provided long term contracts to energy providers with rates as high as 40 times the market value. Combine this fact with the exodos of thousands of manufacturing jobs and you have the perfect storm for runaway Hydro costs.
Within a few short years of this new energy legislation launch, Ontario had a surplus of energy, witnessed further manufacturing business loss, and began what can only be described as meteoric rise in provincial debt. It is nothing short of incredible that the Liberal government did nothing to perform a course correction in the years that have passed. Whether it was due to legal or political reasons we do not know. But the Liberals have allowed this imbalance to go on for years. Paying energy providers billions of dollars they do not have.
So now in 2017, with an election right around the corner, they are making a course correction of a financial kind. They are remortgaging Ontario’s, “Energy House”. Borrowing even more money to pay off the energy providers, and passing our debt on to our children and grandchildren. Yet another bad contract.
Merri asked to hear from the residents of Kanata-Carleton, on “How do high Hydro cost affect you?“. The response from residents was concerning. Merri responded to all who made contact.
Here is a sample of some of the discussions Merri had with residents (names removed for privacy) .
My wife and I have tried hard to reduce our electrical consumption and work off peak as much as possible. Despite our efforts, our electricity bill keeps going up. This new shell game “reduction” is no comfort – it just means we are pushing the cost of McGuinty’s and Wynne’s mistakes down to our children and grandchildren, along with a much higher financing cost, all of which will be paid for by running up even more debt. What has all this green crusading accomplished? Well, we have seen many Ontario jobs disappear to other jurisdictions – China building huge coal-fired plants and USA keeping theirs running. Ontario actually pays the USA to take our excess wind-generated power, which we buy from Wynne’s corporate friends at exorbitant prices. Ontario is headed for financial disaster, and all Wynne is looking for is the next shell game to trick taxpayers and electricity customers out of even more money. Shame on her. Shame on Ontario for voting her in.
Many thanks for your note. I agree completely with your points which is no consolation I realize but we must fight for change. The past decade under the Liberals has set Ontario back badly.
I am taking note of your points for future reference and want to thank you for taking the time to share them.
Please let me know if you have any neighbours or friends in Kanata who might consider an Ontario PC membership. I would be happy to get in touch with them.
Thanks for your support and let’s sweep Wynne and her gang out of power in the next election…it can’t come too soon!
I live in an old log home. I have an efficient heating system. I have insulated and retro-fitted, installed new PellaWindows and done everything possible to reduce rates. I actively use the “off-peak” period as much as possible. I have reduced my overall consumption by 25% from 2013-2017. My January hydro bill was $1,367, notwithstanding being in the U.K. From Dec. 21 until Jan. 9 with a setting of 50C. I left for Florida end of January and set temperature to 40C. The rates are unconscionable! My hydro bill for my home in Florida which is only electric is never in excess of $200 per month. If they can do it why can’t we? Thanks for caring.
Thank you for taking the time to write. It is really shocking how the Ontario Liberals seem detached from experiences such as yours and are now trying to find solutions to a mess they knowingly created.
Do you think the reductions that Wynne is making will make a difference to you?
Don’t know! But I have had enough of the “Liberals”.
If there is anything I can do to help your campaign let me know.
Good luck with your campaign.
Agreed…the Liberals are past their expiration date!
The nomination election may not be until mid April and possibly not until June. There is no firm date yet and lots of speculation.
I appreciate your kind words and wonder if you would consider purchasing a membership to support me at the nomination election. I believe it is going to be a close race and each supporter will make a difference.
If you are interested you can go to my website at www.VoteMerrileeFullerton.ca where you will be able to register for a membership online if you like. A one year membership for $10 is all that is needed.
I would certainly appreciate your help with the campaign. If you have worked on campaigns before you may already have some idea of what you prefer.
Many thanks for your support!
How low will Ontario Liberals go to gain votes? We know that all they are accomplishing is taking us into deeper debt by borrowing money for this so-called relief and deferring electricity costs to the future.
The next thing is that they will attempt to con us again and brag about how their outstanding fiscal policies will allow them to balance the budget prior to the next election.
They will need to find, not difficult for them, more “revenue” tools to cover the shortfall and of course we realize that means, as usual, less money for us already over taxed Ontarians to say nothing about future generations.
If they still had any honour they would admit that they have completely screwed up almost everything they have touched and resign then call an election before they do anymore damage (realize wishful thinking!).
And if by some insanity they get re-elected how long before the energy taxes/prices go back up?
We are definitely aligned in our thinking about the Ontario Liberals, Wynne, and her shell games.
We need people to stand up to this nonsense. Hopefully, Ontario will come to its senses in 2018…maybe even sooner!
Thanks again for getting in touch and for your support!
