April 25, 2018 – Ontario’s Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk held a media conference at Queen’s Park today to warn the public that there are fundamental errors with how the Wynne Government is reporting the numbers in their deficit budgets. The auditor general says the government has understated the projected expenses and deficits over the next three years to the tune of billions of dollars.
Auditor general Bonnie Lysyk states that this year’s budget deficit shortfall is $11.7 billion, not $6.7 billion, as Finance Minister Charles Sousa forecast March 28. The Office of the Ontario Auditor General went to the extraordinary step of issuing a press release that clearly stated:
“…the Ontario Liberal government projected a deficit of $6.7 billion in 2018-19, but the true deficit is 75% higher — $11.7 billion.”
Kanata-Carleton PC candidate Merrilee Fullerton observes, “By under-reporting the realities of Ontario’s deficit and debt, the Wynne Liberals are putting our quality of life at risk. This is irresponsible. Ontario can and must do better.”
“Future Ontarians depend on how responsible and accountable we are with our spending and budget planning,” and Fullerton adds, “This is of utmost concern for our children and grandchildren.”
In a recent media report, Merrilee Fullerton voiced grave concern for the Liberals’ pre-election budget announcements (see Kathleen Wynne and Liberals are irresponsible with your money). She stated: “Ontario is shouldering more debt now than at any other point in its history and the Liberals answer to all of this is to spend more. Enough! They are recklessly digging us all into a deeper and deeper hole.”
At Queen’s Park, Ontario PC Finance Critic MPP Vic Fedeli stated, “This is just the latest example of why Kathleen Wynne is untrustworthy. The Wynne Liberals will do, say, or promise anything to cling to power – this includes using shady accounting practices to bury the true state of Ontario’s books. The Wynne Liberals’ deliberately misleading shell game is proof that the people of Ontario can’t trust this government.”
Ford’s independent commission of inquiry will build on the Auditor General’s work, as well as on best practices from other jurisdictions including former federal Auditor General Sheila Fraser’s probe of the Sponsorship Scandal. The commission will include participation of outside auditors and experts, and be mandated to investigate and recommend options for how to restore integrity in the Government of Ontario’s financial reporting.
Dr. Merrilee Fullerton is the Ontario PC candidate in the new riding of Kanata-Carleton. One of her priority concerns for residents of Kanata-Carleton is Restoring Responsible Budgets at Queen’s Park.
