“Wynne Liberals’ hydro and energy programs have caused great harm to Ontario businesses and households”

April 13, 2018 – Kanata and West Carleton business- and home-owners have been directly impacted by hydro costs and some worry about future rate hikes. Merrilee Fullerton, PC candidate in Kanata-Carleton, comments that people are fully aware of the hydro mess the Wynne Liberals have made and they want to know that it will be cleaned up.

Fullerton assures people she speaks with: “It’s a priority to clean up Ontario’s hydro mess.”

The facts speak volumes.

  • Since 2003, Ontario residents have seen their hydro bills triple, costing the average family more than $1,000 more a year.
  • Hydro One is mismanaged and yet in 2017 the CEO was handed a $1.7 million dollar bonus and took home $6.2 million and top hydro executives were awarded with millions of dollars in bonuses.
  • Ontario’s industrial users saw electricity prices jump 46 per cent between 2010 and 2016, while average increases in the rest of Canada was only 14 percent
  • Ontario’s high electricity prices reduced employment in manufacturing by some 75,000 jobs between 2008 and 2015.
  • Wynne Liberals’ “Fair Hydro Plan” has taken 25 per cent off everyone’s bills in Fall of 2017, but rates are scheduled to jump again after the election in late 2018 and 2019.

The sky-high electricity rates and scandalous energy program are Ontario-made problems, inflicted on Ontarians by a decade of mismanagement by the Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne Governments – so concludes the Fraser Institute’s report Understanding the Changes in Ontario’s Electricity Markets and Their Effects.

Merrilee Fullerton says fixing the hydro situation will take a concerted effort and it will take time, “Wynne Liberals’ hydro and energy programs have caused great harm to Ontario businesses and households. A PC Government will tackle this mess straight on and begin to clean it up immediately upon taking office.”

“It is going to take time to see some relief from high hydro bills because some of the costs are now fixed and with us long term. But it is not right when families and seniors in Ontario are having to choose between eating or heating their home. We need to correct this. We will correct this,” states Fullerton.

Yesterday, PC Leader Doug Ford announced his intention to fire the current CEO, as well as the entire Board, of Hydro One. Ford stated, “It is morally indefensible, at a time when seniors are fearful of heating their own homes, when businesses are closing down and good jobs are moving out of our province, and when taxpayers are facing financial hardships – all due to skyrocketing hydro bills – that this Board and this CEO are laughing themselves to the bank.”

Aside from firing the CEO of Hydro One and reining in executive compensation, the PCs have promised to:

  • scrap the Green Energy Act that includes more than $9.2 billion of overpayments for contracts awarded to Liberal donors.
  • place a moratorium on future energy contracts. Ontario currently has a surplus of power that we ship to competing states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio at a loss.
  • review line by line through every energy contract and look for exit clauses.
