October 12, 2017 – When asked about the conservative principles that guide her, Dr. Merrilee Fullerton connects responsible spending and sound fiscal management with the ability of government to serve its people and to give a hand up to those in need. At the core of her conservativism is a firm commitment to make and keep the promise for a better tomorrow.
In Merrilee’s own words….
“I am a fiscal conservative. I grew up in a family with a waste not, want not approach where working hard was valued and where resources managed respectfully meant having opportunity to create a good life. At the same time, demonstrating compassion and providing a helping hand up to those around us was what we did as a family and as part of the larger community. Conservatism can be fiscally responsible and compassionate.
“I believe that it is sound fiscal management that allows government to act with compassion. It is fiscal responsibility and sound fiscal management that create the potential for government to have the resources available to provide for people at their most vulnerable times, to contribute to the common good, and to create opportunity for all. The strong belief of a better tomorrow and the potential of people to contribute to opportunity is core to conservatism.
“Important social programs such as health care and education require steady and sustained government funding. In Ontario over the past decade we have witnessed many billions of tax dollars wasted. The Wynne government now spends roughly one billion dollars every month just on interest payments for the debt it continues to pile up. These are tax dollars that could have gone to much better use. We must move forward in a more thoughtful way to avoid wasteful policies and programs that damage the ability of government to serve its people.
“To be a Progressive Conservative is to see the promise that the future holds. It is to understand our current needs as well as anticipating future needs. It is to conserve and sustain what we have built while continuing to progress and evolve. It is to have the courage to see what is and what could be. Creating opportunity requires combining responsible spending and respect for people’s hard work with the belief that there can be a better tomorrow.
On providing a positive voice…
“Some people say that our Province is past the tipping point and the mountain of debt is too high to recover from. But I say that with determination, hard work, and a sound fiscal approach we will have a promising future in Ontario.
“I believe in the future of Ontario. That is why I want to put my name forward in Kanata-Carleton as a Progressive Conservative in the next provincial election. Values of responsibility, compassion, integrity and accountability have guided me through life, through my medical career, my volunteering, and in raising my family. These are the principles which Ontario desperately needs.
“I look forward to the opportunity to work with Patrick Brown and to be part of a new PC government. We will work hard and make the necessary changes towards a more promising future for our Province.”
Dr. Merrilee Fullerton is the Ontario PC candidate for the new riding of Kanata-Carleton.
